Playing With the Big Boats
2011 - Day 157. June 6, 2011.
Thanks to a heads up from a friend, I was at the harbour this morning to watch the second launch of the Great Lakes freighter, Black Bay. Known as Hull 172, Black Bay was built in Collingwood and launched on September 20, 1962. After an illustrious forty year career as one of the 'Queens of the Lakes', (a moniker afforded the longest vessel(s) on the Great Lakes), she was beached for scrap in Aliaga, Turkey. This beautiful replica was built by Don Near of Hanover. Unlike the spectacular side launch of the original, this ship slipped quietly into the calm waters of the harbour to flawlessly conduct her maiden tour .
