Memories of a Time Gone By - Version #2
365-213-2. August 1, 2009. I am very grateful to people who take the time to comment. Your valuable input is helping me make progress toward my goal of taking better photographs. Based on comments on today's photo ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/3780317045/ ) from @mikecogh, @windsordi, @bobsd46 and @konarheim I've tried a second version, still with a vintage feel, but less over-the-top. Am I getting closer?

Enjoying the Sunshine
365-211. July 30, 2009. Finally - a summer day! There was beautiful light on my walk along the Black Ash Creek trail this morning. This moth rested long enough to soak up some sunshine.

Caught Up in the Moment
365-209. July 28, 2009. I met this happy girl on my walk this morning. She didn't care one bit that it was cloudy and drizzling. She was caught up in the joy of running along the trail. There's a lesson to be learned here.

Raindrop
365-207. July 26, 2009. I picked up my new macro lens yesterday. This isn't a great shot, but the best of the bunch I've taken this morning. There's a bit of a learning curve here. Here's what I've learned so far:
-use a tripod
-there can be no wind
-use manual focus
Any and all words of wisdom will be most welcome. I want to get better at this :-)raindrop375760887336520092009365365 photos365Collingwoodgardenmacro
Collingwood Elvis Festival - There's an Elvis on Every Street Corner!
365-206. July 25, 2009. Overcast, rainy weather doesn't seem to be taking any of the sparkle out of Collingwood's Elvis Festival. This impersonator brightened the street as he talked to fans.

Collingwood Elvis Festival - Wow! Is that Elvis?
365-205. July 24, 2009. The annual Elvis Festival is underway and downtown Collingwood is teeming with Elvis impersonators and fans. This young guy had the look going for him and seemed spellbound by the "Elvi" that appeared in all ages, colours, sizes and shapes.

What?! (Original Version)
365-204-2. When I looked at yesterday's photo ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/3751138460/ ) this morning, I realized I didn't like the fractalius effect I used. Since that photo has comments attached, I've uploaded the original, rather than just replace it. I like this one better. Now, I can get on with today's photo :-)

Choppy
365-203. July 22, 2009. Sunset Point in Collingwood. The bay's choppy today and at 18 degrees Celsius, in my opinion, too cold for swimming .

I Think the Coast Is Clear
365-202. July 21, 2009. The coreopsis are now growing lushly under the bird feeder. As soon as the squirrels hear me coming, they scoot down the pole and hide among the plants. This one stuck his head out when he thought I'd left. I snapped his picture...and then chased them all away :-)

Morning Dew
365-201. July 20, 2009. My phlox glistened with dew this morning. They are my favourite flowers in my garden, each blossom so tiny and delicate, yet so visually powerful congregated together.

"Antique" Hydrangeas
365-200. July 19, 2009. Hydrangeas were discovered in the wild and first introduced to "New World" gardens in the early 1700's. They remind me of times gone by, so I added an antique look when I processed my photos. For more "antique" hydrangeas, visit my photoblog gallery ( http://dibytes.ca/?p=2279 ) .

365-198. July 17, 2009. We're finally getting some weather that looks a bit more like summer should. The bees seem happy; my garden is a buzz with them this morning. Visit the Garden Buzz Gallery ( http://dibytes.ca/?p=2264 ) on my photoblog for more bees in the garden.

I get by with a little help from my friends...
365-196. July 15, 2009. It was an overcast day today, but the wind was good for the sailing school in Collingwood's harbour. These two instructors were scooting about, lending a hand where it was needed.

This Doesn't Look Good!
365-194. July 13, 2009. Space Shuttle Endeavour launch attempt #5. This was a carbon copy of the day before. As I sat in the viewing stands watching these guys set up their camera equipment, I captured their expressions as they turned to look at the sky behind us. The looks on their faces mirrored the sinking feeling we all felt as we watched the storm roll in.

Mountains in the Sky
365-191. July 10, 2009. Arriving in Orlando for my third attempt to watch space shuttle Endeavour launch on mission STS-127 to the International Space Station. As beautiful as these voluminous clouds were, they were part of the weather system that forced three more launch scrubs. The next launch attempt is Wednesday, July 15. Unfortunately I’ve now returned home, so I won’t be there.

365-190. July 9, 2009. Sunset Point, Collingwood.
I've been writing a few words about each photo here on my flickr site and then cross-posting to my photo blog ( http://www.dibytes.ca ) . I've decided to do as a few of you do and just write the caption here and then link to the post. I am very appreciative of the time many of you have spent leaving comments here. Is it an inconvenience to have to click once more to read my post? Will this new practice deter you from leaving comments?

Washed Out
365-189. July 8, 2009. I went out to the garden this morning to take a colourful picture to brighten up another cold, wet, windy and dreary summer (?) day. My eye went right to my brilliant orange lilies. Something happened though once I imported the photo into Lightroom. My inner eye took over and the photo ended up reflecting what I feel, rather than what I saw.

Come Sit a Spell?
365-188. July 7, 2009. Benches welcome visitors all along the boardwalk on the Hens and Chickens trail in Collingwood. Inviting if it weren't grey, cold, windy and wet! I took refuge on a sheltered bench as the heavens opened up right after I took this shot.

I never do this - pull a shot from the archives, but I've always loved this portrait of our friend. It was one of the very first shots that I took with my then-new Canon T1i. Gone with the Wind
365-185. July 4, 2009. This surfer looked like he was enjoying the wind, but it was bitterly cold. Nottawasaga Bay is never warm at the best of times, but with the cold weather we've been having so far this spring and summer, it's not likely to warm up much.

I Can Sit Here All Day...
365-184. July 3, 2009. The sun shone briefly this afternoon, providing my solar-powered cat with enough energy to chase a little creature into the bushes. It's still pretty wet in there from the endless rain we've been experiencing, so Clyde opted to wait out his prey on a warm, dry log.

The clouds lay low over the perfectly still bay today, making it hard to tell where one stopped and the other started. Only the islands offshore gave any indication of the horizon; it all just seemed to merge and go on forever.Infinity368292751436520092009365365365 photosCollingwoodNottawasaga Bay
Oh Canada!
365-182. July 1, 2009. The crowd gathered in front of the Federal Building in downtown Collingwood seemed oblivious to the light drizzle as they sang the National Anthem. A citizenship re-affirmation ceremony was part of Collingwood's Canada Day celebrations.

Wildflowers
365-176. June 25, 2009. Very delicate and small, I'm guessing these wildflowers are members of the aster family. They were growing profusely among the beach grass, in a marshy area at Wasaga Beach. The delicateness of their petals has been enhanced with the Fractalius plugin in Photoshop.

Riding in the Rain
365-171. June 20, 2009. In less than ideal conditions, the Ride for Sight motorcyclists roared into Collingwood, making their contribution to the fight against blindness. I'm a fair-weather rider myself, and rain gear or not, riding in the rain is not my idea of a good time. My hat's off to all the riders!

Breaking the News
365-167. June 17 - 2:00 am. The launch of space shuttle Endeavour is scrubbed again!
There are a couple of things I need to say about this photo.
1. The picture quality is poor. I had experimented for hours with the camera settings I wanted to use to capture the pre-dawn launch and my camera was set for those conditions. As we were listening to the cancellation announcement, I grabbed a shot, quickly trying to set the camera to auto, hoping for the best. I didn't want to risk losing the moment while changing my settings. Not a good result, but it tells the story well - the blur of racing back down to Florida, being awake for almost 24 hours, disappointment, concern for the astronauts...
2. Technically this shot missed Day 167 by a couple of hours. In my mind, since I hadn't been to bed that day, it was still June 16. ...And so be it - my submission for Day 167, June 16, 2009.BreakingtheNews363769374136520092009365365365 photosCanadian Space AgencyCSAlaunchspace shuttle EndeavourFlorida

Launch of Endeavour Scrubbed

This photo of Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen and myself was taken at the reception for Julie Payette, on the eve of her scheduled launch to the International Space Station. Not What You Look At, But What You See - Part 1
365-161-1. June 10, 2009. The phrase I used in the title for this photo is attributed to David Thoreau. It resonates with me. I took this photo today and was happy with the result. The light was good for early afternoon - the highlights weren't burned out. The photo is very crisp and the detail is good. However, it doesn't satisfy my inner eye or make my soul sing. The edited version ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/3615054329/ ) does. What's your preference?
