We don't put our Muskoka chairs away for the winter. They're old and almost to the point of being beyond salvage. I like to see them sitting in the yard, braving all kinds of weather, just waiting for me. I do bundle up and use them sometimes in winter, to soak up a few rays of weak sunshine, or sit quietly and watch the birds at my feeders.WeatheredWornWaiting422869140636520092009365365365 photosCollingwoodDecemberMuskoka chairchairdailyshootsnowwinter

I considered skipping today's challenge as it was cold, dark, dismal and the radar map showed the snow squalls that were forecast were imminent. However as I still need to walk off Christmas goodies, I bundled up and headed to the waterfront. I love these trees - they frame the view of Collingwood's harbour and grain elevators. There's a bench to sit on and enjoy the varied views framed in spring green, rich summer green, vibrant reds and oranges or stark greys. All very different - all beautiful!FramingtheView4222805407365365 photosCollingwoodDecemberHarbourview Parkdailyshootgrain elevatorsicetreeswaterwinterds43

Christmas is over and today's a time for relaxation! We prepared three family celebration meals over the past two days. I loved each one, but now it's time to unwind, relax and eat leftovers :-). For today's challenge I wanted to take a shot of my husband, (relaxing in his favourite chair with his daily puzzle - warming in the rare burst of sunshine), but this is as much of him as he'd let me use. I like the shot anyway; it feels like a representative portrait.portraitRelaxation421854050336520092009365365365 photosBobCollingwoodDecemberdailyshoothandpenpuzzlesepiasunshineds42

This was a tough assignment for a day that was dark, cold and snowing lightly! I took this shot from my dad's bench in Collingwood's Millenium Park (overlooking the now freezing harbour in the foreground and Blue Mountain in the background). In the last year of his life, Dad's only wish was to be able to go sit on a bench and 'watch the world go by'. Unfortunately that wasn't possible, but after he passed away, we had a bench and garden on the waterfront dedicated in his memory. I go there often to 'watch the world go by'...TheWorldfromDad'sBench421702141336520092009365365365 photosdailyshootds41Blue MountainCollingwoodCollingwood HarbourDecemberMillenium ParkNottawasaga Baywinter

Clyde has a half dozen of these ribbons scattered around the house. Most of the time he acts far too sophisticated to even give them a glance (after all he has much more interesting toys to play with in our yard). Every once in a while though the great hunter springs to action, captures the ribbons and wrestles them to the ground. For a few moments this morning the ribbon had the upper hand but Clyde managed to prevail in the end!It'sAlive420890692436520092009365365365 photosChristmasClydeCollingwoodDecembercatdailyshootribbonds38

This daily shoot assignment came on the first real day off I've had in months - no work, no looking after mother, no errands, no 'to do' list! I took this photo in a mirror I propped on my front porch as I headed out for a walk in the blowing snow. This was a tough shot to light properly. I decided not to fight the light but just go with it and enhance the blown out areas. (The neat added benefit was that no skin softening was required :-). In order for me to relax I have to clear my head first. The time I spend each day with my camera does just that! Black and white is pretty easy today as we're being hit by a winter storm. This is the kind of storm I hate - a mixed bag of precipitation. We've had snow, and high winds. Now with the temperature warming a bit, we'll get wet snow/freezing rain/rain. This will be followed by a temperature drop, and then lake-effect snow squalls. This is the view of my yard from my patio door. You can see why I elected to take my photo today from indoors :-)winterstorm4172108752365365 photosCollingwoodDecemberdailyshootsnow36520092009365drops

Place of Honour
365-340. Dec. 6, 2009. I decorated our Christmas tree last night/early this morning. Our tree changes from year to year. Last year I bought a new, pre-lit tree. I did stick with the colour scheme I've used the last couple of years, but I've added some new ornaments. One thing that hasn't ever changed in the last thirty years is the placement of our hand painted Peter Rabbit ornament. It was a gift for our son on his first Christmas and always sits prominently in the place of honour in the center of the tree.

I live on the shores of Georgian Bay in an area that is prone to snowsqualls. Streamers of snow blow in across the bay and in the blink of an eye reduce our visibility to near zero. Daily Shoot #ds15 - 2009/11/30: Happy, sad, frazzled, or stuffed to the gills? Make an abstract or literal photo that expresses how you feel today ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot ) .
I wanted to take a photo of this crow perched on a branch that didn't seem like it could hold it. As soon as I raised my camera it took flight and approached me through the fog.
After I pulled the photo off the camera, I realized it was perfect for today's Daily Shoot assignment. I feel very much like I've been in an auto-pilot, foggy state the past few days - fatigued by a hectic time at work, worried about my mother's recent hospitalization, stressed over a real estate deal. There are a couple of things I like about this shot. One is the focal length. At this range you really can't tell if this is a regular or irregular pattern. I love these well-worn shoes! I've had them for years and they've been so many places. I wear them to the airport when I'm going south because they handle snow better than sandals, but still feel like sandals when I get on the plane and slip my socks off. (They cause me grief at airport security, but then so does breathing :-( ). This time last year they were already retired for the season as we had in excess of 100 cm of snow on the ground. This year I'm happily still wearing them.shoes414277181436520092009365365365 photosCollingwooddailyshoot

( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/6081795760 ) I'm making do with one entry today for both 365 and Daily Shoot - a toadstool growing in my lawn in November! No, I'm not thankful for toadstools! Like many, many other people, I'm thankful for the things that form the "foundation" of my life - my family, friends, work, health. But I'm also truly thankful for the small wonders seen daily through my mind's eye and the lens of my camera. They add beauty, emotion, whimsy, clarity, wonderment and playfulness to my life. In my yard, that this time last year was buried in snow, I discovered a little group of toadstools. I am thankful for such beautiful visual surprises.

I live very close to an awesome body of water - Nottawasaga Bay, (the southern tip of Georgian Bay). It is never smooth as glass, not even when it's frozen over. The conditions were so miserable today (cold, damp, foggy, dark) that I considered skipping this challenge. I'm glad I didn't. The bay was very calm today. I used a long exposure (6 sec.) to let in enough light; this had the effect of blurring the ripples in the water and making it look like glass.Water413195112736520092009365365365 photosCollingwoodCollingwood HarbourNottawasaga BayNovemberautumncloudydailyshootfallgreyovercastrocksshoreslatewaterfront

I'll have to admit that lying on the cold, damp ground to take today's Daily Shoot assignment was much easier than approaching strangers for yesterday's!
Most days I'll try to keep my groups separate and submit different photos for Daily Shoot and 365. Other days, like today, time will dictate that I use the same shot for both.
This is another example of trying to work with what you've got. It was damp and very overcast today. I decided to go for the light, let the noise happen and then play on it.WoolyBearcaterpillar4129751828daily shoot36520092009365365365 photosBlack Ash Creek TrailCollingwoodNovemberautumnfall
Strangers Waiting for a Plane
Daily Shoot - 2009/11/22: Approach a total stranger and make a portrait of them.
I don't know these two women; nor do they know each other. What we had in common is that we were all in the same airport waiting for a plane. We met after I shot this photo and approached the women to ask their permission to post it here. We will likely never meet again...StrangersWaitingforPlane4127643788airportdailyshootstrangerwomanwomen
I Wonder Where This Goes
365-326. Nov. 22, 2009. I tried to get out each morning and explore Red Deer while I'm here at a conference. They have a nice trail system but it was a tough place to take photos with the low light conditions. I didn't have a tripod so I bumped up the ISO and the exposure. I was unhappy with the resulting noise level, so I decided to play on it and add even more to create a painterly effect.
