Winter Garden
2010-13. Jan. 13, 2010. This garden in Collingwood's Harbourview Park is full of Rose of Sharon bushes, a deciduous flowering shrub with beautiful blossoms. This is all you can see of the bushes right now - one solitary frozen rose hip!

Boots - Fashion Statement?
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/13: Make a photo of something you wear to keep yourself warm and/or dry: coat, gloves, scarf, hat, you name it ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot ) !
One of the benefits of working from a home office is that you can usually arrange your schedule to take breaks during the day (after all a BlackBerry takes up very little space in your pocket). The sun is almost out and the temperature is almost zero, so I'm off to snowshoe for a while! These are my snowshoeing boots. Warm? Yes! Waterproof? Yes! Fashionable? Not so much!bootsFashionStatement4271938520CollingwoodJanuarydailyshootsnowsnowshoeswinterds59
Black and White with a Splash of Colour
2010-11. Jan. 11, 2010
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/11: What's your favorite color? Make a photo dominated by your favorite color today and share it ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuse/7630103202 ) !
I often find my colour choices are determined by my mood or energy level. More often than not, I'm a black and white, with a splash of colour, kind of girl. It's dramatic and energized, just like this photo! I met this dog this afternoon on my walk. He was so into the chase that he was spraying up snow everywhere. That's an energy level I'd like to have! I'll think of him the next time I put on 'black and white with a splash of colour' :-)BlackandWhitewithSplashColour42672237422010365photos365365 photosCollingwoodHarbourview ParkJanuaryballdailyshootdogsnowwinter
Scattered Flurries at Sunset
2010-10. Jan.10, 2010.
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/10: Challenge: Silhouettes are an interesting way to abstract a subject. Make a photo featuring a silhouetted subject today ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/7593219403 ) .
I went down to Collingwood's Millenium Park today to catch Blue Mountain across the frozen harbour, silhouetted against the setting sun. What I didn't expect were the snow flurries happening on the mountain. It was not snowing where I was. This is what Environment Canada calls 'scattered, localized snow flurries'.ScatteredFlurriessunset42645873882010365photos365365 photosds56dailyshootCollingwoodJanuaryMillenium Parkharboursnowwinter
Saturday Paper - Cold, Hard News!
2010-9. Jan. 9, 2010.
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/09: The printed newspaper isn't as common as it used to be. Find a newspaper today and make a photo any way you like ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/7557440787 ) !

Newspaper?
Before you can read the paper around here you have to find it. Today there was no digging required; just a light covering of snow. The odd time it gets caught in the snowblower (and that's not pretty).SaturdayPaperColdHardNews42589295972010365photos365365 photosCollingwoodJanuaryToronto Stardailyshootnewspapersnowwinterds55
Dig Out the Sunglasses
2010-8. Jan. 8, 2010.
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/08: Glasses help many folks bring the world into focus each day. Make a photo of a pair of any kind of glasses today ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/7519133356 ) .
Two weeks from today I'll need those sunglasses in sunny Mexico! I know it's only January, but I for one am already sick of winter. Mexico here I come...DigOutthesunglasses42561983372010365photos365365 photosCollingwoodJanuarydailyshooteye glasseswinterds54
Come Sit a Spell
2010-7. Jan. 7, 2010.
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/07: It's winter time here in the northern hemisphere. Make a photo with snow, frost, or ice as the theme today ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/7479375853 ) .
Millenium Park, on Collingwood's waterfront, is graced with many benches, most of which are dedicated to the memory of friends and loved ones. On a hot summer day, you could sit here for hours just watching life unfold in the harbour. This shot gives you a good indication of just how strong and cold the winds that sweep across the bay are! While snow is piled high everywhere else, here it has been swept away by icy blasts!ComeSitSpell42539747952010365photos365365 photosCollingwoodJanuaryMillenium Parkbenchdailyshooticesnowwinterds53
Night Skiing at Blue Mountain
2010-6. Jan. 6, 2010.
Daily Shoot - We typically use light to illuminate a subject. Turn it around today and make a photo of a light source of any kind ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/7458975707 ) .
This is a nightly sight for miles around Collingwood - the lights illuminating Blue Mountain for night skiing. It was a horrible night for taking photos - windy with freezing drizzle. I tried to take this photo from the waterfront, across the frozen harbour, but the wind and cold were too fierce! I drove up towards the mountain instead, pulled over by a farmer's field, and set up my tripod in the glow of my headlights. (I did not add this sepia colour; this is the way it was!) I didn't get the clarity or DOF I was going for. There was too much moisture in the air and it was far too cold to hang around trying different settings :-(.NightSkiingBlueMountain42520433872010365photos365365 photosBlue MountainCollingwoodJanuarylightsski hillwinterdailyshootds52
Reflection
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/05: Reflections draw the eye. Find a pool, puddle, or other body of still water and make a photo of a reflected subject today ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/7403872516 ) .
Natural bodies of water here are now frozen! So...I had to look indoors for some water. I use these little glass pebbles in the bottom of clear flower vases to add interest. When I took the shot I focused on the edge of the water, rather than the glass pebbles. (This was a tough shot to light - I've definitely got to learn more about lighting!)reflection4248669091Collingwoodbeadsdailyshootglasswaterds51
Snow Ball?
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/04: The frame of a photograph is rectilinear. Fill that frame with a circular subject today and make a photograph ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/7367531701 ) .
This is a Colorado blue spruce tree in my yard, branches beautifully laden with snow. I used the polar coordinates filter in Photoshop to distort the photo into a circle. I haven't done one of these in a while - lots of fun!snowBall4245414128CollingwoodColorado Blue SpruceJanuaryglobesprucetreewinterds50
Found My Chair
2010-4. Jan. 4, 2009.
This is an update to yesterday's pic ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4240529045/ ) . It's still snowing gently but the wind has died down so now it's time to dig out. My husband blew a path to the back door with the snowblower so I could get out to take this photo. Now I just need him to dig out my chair :-)FoundChair42446638792010365photos365365 photosCollingwoodJanuaryMuskoka chairsnow
Piling Up
2010-2. Jan. 2, 2009.
We've been stuck under a stationary snow squall for a couple of days now. You expect to see the snow pile up on the branches of large evergreens, but it's kind of neat to see it pile up so high on on the skinny branches of the bushes in my garden.Piling42374903672010365photos365365 photosCollingwoodJanuarysnowtreeswinter
Yellow
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/02: Yellow is an attention-getting color. Make a photograph that is dominated by yellow today ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/7299998454 ) .
I had to look inside today to find any colour as it's pretty white outdoors ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4237490367/ ) . I put the cup on a white backdrop so the yellow would pop.Opportunity - Do You See It?
2010-1. Jan. 1, 2010.
Daily Shoot - 2010/01/01: The new year represents opportunity. Make a photo of a scene looking out a window ( http://twitter.com/dailyshoot/statuses/7269628399 ) .
What an interesting challenge to start off the new year! This is a combination of two photos shot in succession looking out my kitchen window. The only difference between the two shots is the focus, but the results are dramatically different. (I put my camera on manual focus for both shots). It's a good reminder that opportunity is all around us - sometimes we just need to refocus to see it!
Happy New Year everybody! May you find and act on the opportunities that present themselves this year!OpportunityYouSee42348527842010365photos365 photosJanuarydailyshootsnowtreeswindowwinterCollingwoodds47edtech3652010
