Life on the Waterfront
I've just completed Day 1 of CreativeLive's Beyond Photography - Artistic Post Production with Doug Landreth ( http://www.creativelive.com/courses/beyond-photography-artistic-post-production-doug-landreth ) .
This is my homework assignment. The task is to:
1. Start with a photo of a single element that is regional to our area.
I started with the seagull on a post, (same bird, different pose here ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/5183404066/ ) ).
2. Create a layered file, with that single element image, blending in some textures.
To create my texture I combined a couple of different beach sand shots from last summer, as well as the sailboat shot I posted here ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4818362883/ ) .
I like the composition. Now that it's posted though, i think my texture layer is a bit strong.
I'm looking forward to Day 2 of the course tomorrow!Lifethewaterfront5820146478CLCollingwoodbeachcompositegrain elevatorssailboatsandseagulltextureCreativeLiveDougLandreth

Wall of Ice
2010 - Day 364. Dec. 30, 2010.
After a very wintry December, it appears we're getting our January thaw early! Temperatures hovered around freezing today and are supposed to go up several degrees over the next few days. Deep snow drifts on roofs are turning into walls of ice as they slowly melt during the day and then freeze at night. It's a good idea to watch where you walk!Wallice5307816559365 photos365CollingwoodDecemberbuildingwinter

Daily Shoot - The rule of thirds is a time-honored composition guideline. Put it to use today in a photo ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/410 ) .
After a very wintry December we're getting our January thaw early, with temperatures hovering around freezing and set to rise over the next couple of days. The good news is that the snowbanks are receding (yeah!). The bad news is the slushy mesh on the roads. As badly as my car needs a wash it would be a complete waste of time!WashPlease5308427758CollingwoodDecembercardailyshootds410snow bankwinter

It's funny. I've shot this Christmas ball several times over the holidays - backlit, sidelit, you name it. I haven't been happy with any of the shots. For today's challenge I decided to just go with the natural light of yet another overcast day. This one I like! No Fishing Today
2010 - Day 362. Dec. 28, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Illustrate coldness in a photograph today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/408 ) .
This is one of the spots where fishermen anchor their rods along the waterfront in Collingwood's Millennium Park. While the inner harbour is frozen over, it takes some time for turbulent Nottawasaga Bay, (part of the larger Georgian Bay), to freeze. The wind picks up the moisture and encases everything it touches in sheets of ice.
I'm not overly pleased with this shot. It was hard to expose for on such a dismal day. It's not the vantage point I wanted either, but since I haven't fully recovered yet from my recent fall just metres from this spot, I played it safe :-)FishingToday5301777594365 photosCollingwoodDecemberNottawasaga Baydailyshootfishing standsicesnowwaterwinter
On the Roof!
Daily Shoot - What fuels your creative process? Illustrate it in a photo today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/406 ) .
The tranquility of our little cul-de-sac was shattered by the wail of sirens this morning as fire trucks raced to our neighbours' house. This is a shot of firefighters cutting a hole through the snow-covered roof. Thankfully the neighbours weren't home and no one was injured. See today's 365 pic for another view of the scene ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/5293289959/ ) .
This shot does typify how my creative process works for photography. I can usually see some beauty or something compelling when I look at a scene, but the moment I look through the viewfinder I really start to distill things and look for the essence. It feels like the narrowed field of vision through the viewfinder clears the clutter from both the periphery of the scene and my brain :-). I love the way the firefighters suddenly appeared here - through the smoke, vapour, trees and snow drifts on the roof.theroof5293915274CollingwoodDecemberdailyshootfirefire fightersfire truckshousesmokeds406
Fire!
2010 - Day 360. Dec. 26, 2010.
We live on a quiet little cul-de-sac tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the town. The tranquility that we take for granted was shattered this morning by the wail of sirens racing to our neighbours' house. Fortunately they are away so no one was home. They do have a kitten that we didn't see come out, so I'm not sure where that kitty is. Kudos to the guys on our fire department who handled the blaze in a very efficient and competent fashion! Quiet Moment by the Pool
Dec. 25, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Illustrate your idea of peace and harmony--or maybe just peace and quiet--today with a photograph ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/405 ) .
Amid all the hustle and bustle of Christmas it's nice to step out into the yard and enjoy a quiet moment. We haven't had any new snow in the past week, and with temperatures just below freezing, the snowbanks and drifts are melting a bit and settling. I can now see the outlines of our Muskoka chairs at the end of the pool.
I hope you all have some quiet reflective time to recharge over the holidays! Merry Christmas!QuietMomentthepool5291334706365 photos365ChristmasCollingwoodDecemberMuskoka chairsdailyshootds405snowyard

This was a fun experiment :-). We received a gift basket wrapped in patterned cellophane. I bunched up the cellophane, tucked it into the Christmas tree, and shot wide open at f/2.8. Daily Shoot - Make a photo of a hallway or passage and post it today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/400 ) .
I was disappointed when I read the prompt for today's Daily Shoot challenge because my hallways aren't very interesting. You can imagine how delighted I was to look out my dining room window into my yard and see my shot! All of the shrubs in my garden are buried under several feet of snow, but there's a network of little passageways under the snow, that lead from den to den tucked away under those bushes. I caught this squirrel as he popped his head out of his passageway, looked around and then re-entered. They're not great photos as they were taken quickly through my window, but there you have it - an under'ground' passageway :-)Under'ground'Passage5278328168365 photos365CollingwoodDecemberdailyshootds400snowsquirrelyard

Daily Shoot - Illustrate one of the meanings of the the word warmth today in a photograph ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/399 ) .
This is one of my set of Christmas angels. They're not valuable in the monetary sense. They have cracks and imperfections and I adore them. They make me feel peaceful. I shot this one wide open, with soft focus, and lit by the warm glow of candlelight. I then added an aged mosaic texture in Photoshop. She looks like she's been playing that lute forever. My wish for all of you is to find your own special angel to bring you peace and joy!
Note: I re-processed this image, replacing the mosaic texture with craqueline. That new image is on my photoblog ( http://dibytes.ca/?p=4544 ) . I like it even better than this one.Christmasangel5275345057365 photos365CollingwoodDecemberdailyshootmosaicfigurineds399

Shhh! Can You Hear Them Falling?
2010 - Day 351. Dec. 17, 2010.
It's a good thing it's looking like it's going to be a very long winter, because before it's over, I intend to master photographing snow in all its many moods!
The really tough part is to avoid the blue overcast. I shot this very warm - at 12,000 K. I also bumped up the exposure compensation. I picked a tree branch that had another branch in the background, so there would be some contrast. I kind of have the mood right, but it doesn't 'sing'. I'll keep trying. Since winter hasn't officially started yet, it looks like I'll have lots of time to experiment. Any suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated :-)ShhhCanYouHearThemFalling5269726540365 photos365CollingwoodDecembercrystalssnowsnowflakeswinter

Daily Shoot - Illustrate the word equality today with a photograph that shows your favorite interpretation ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/387 ) .
Today's challenge no doubt deserves a more thoughtful and serious approach, but my brain isn't up to it. I opted for the superficial instead. This is a macro shot of a handful of my bird seed mix. I try to treat all of my feathered friends equally well, so there's something there for every species that visits the feeders. What individual birds don't like, they drop for the ground feeders who are happy to retrieve it. With the blast of winter we've been experiencing the past week these poor little creatures deserve all the help they can get!EqualityforFeatheredFriends5242514744365 photos365CollingwoodDecemberbird seeddailyshootds387macro

Daily Shoot - Make a photograph today with strong direct light that casts crisp dark shadows ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/386 ) . I probably should have skipped this challenge but I wanted to do something with the view from my kitchen window. We're still sitting underneath snow squall streamers off Georgian Bay. (See today's 365 pic ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/5238837180/ ) ). Visibility in blowing snow is limited and there simply aren't shadows to be found. The approach I took was to expose for the light outside and then play up the shadowed area of the snow piled up against my kitchen window. To make it more interesting, (and less depressing), I really bumped up the blue and purple hues in the underexposed drift. -Strong direct light? X -Crisp shadows? X -Dark shadows? ✓ I guess I'll settle for one out of three for this challenge!

This is my 6'2" husband using the snow blower to clear a path to the back door. Before he blew away that chunk off the corner of the drift, the family room felt like a dark cave. I'm guessing that the intent of this challenge was probably a diagonal line, but if you've visited my photostream before you'll know I rarely follow the challenge to the letter ;-) This composition is both simple and strong and fits the narrative of my daily life.
We got about 40 cm. of snow yesterday. It's piled up everywhere, even on my metal fence! We are still sitting under a band of snow squalls off Georgian Bay, so there's lots more of this yet to come! Our latest weather warning says we can expect 20-40 cm. more by morning. The good news is that the wind hasn't been an issue so far. It's Not About the Fish...
2010 - Day 335. Dec. 1, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Use vignetting in a photograph today. Either add it in post (easier) or do it in camera via lens or lighting (harder) ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/381 ) .
I had a lot of fun with this challenge. My first reaction was yeah, easy - I can shoot anything and just vignette it! But then I started thinking about the reasons you'd want to add a vignette and decided to treat it as an integral part of the composition, rather than an add-on.
I processed this image with Adobe Lightroom 3. All the highlights were in the centre of the image, so I really cranked them up. That gave me an automatic darkening effect around the edges. I had dark shadows, so I desaturated the image and added a blue filter just to the shadows. To warm the picture ever so slightly, (in spite of the fact there was absolutely nothing warm about the scene), I added a hint of purple to the highlights. Finally I added a bit of vignetting to my already dark edges. I think the processing really sets the mood for my storyline.It'sNotAbouttheFish5224768160365 photos365CraigleithDecemberNottawasaga Baydailyshootds381fishermanfishing rodmanwatercold

Daily Shoot - Illustrate what the word vision means to you. Either be literal or interpret it broadly and artistically ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/379 ) .
I just finished reading David Duchemin's newest ebook: The Vision Driven Photographer ( http://www.pixelatedimage.com/blog/2010/11/new-ebook-the-vision-driven-photographer/ ) .
He starts off with the simple statement: Vision matters.
He elaborates with: It is not a peripheral subject reserved for the photographic elite or photographers with a sociopathic bent towards navelgazing. It is the place we begin, and the road we travel, on the way to our goal - creating compelling photographs that express something we’ve no other means of expressing but through the frame.
Your vision - where will it lead you? On well-worn pathways? On undiscovered trails? In straight lines? Through winding curves? Into the light? Toward the dark? Outward? Inward?
I took this photo at my husband's office using his Canon retinal image scanning equipment. (He's an optometrist). As November fades we've definitely left 'pretty' autumn behind. Spirits of the Pine
2010 - Day 324. Nov. 20, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Tungsten light can often create a warming effect, depending on your white balance. Use tungsten light in a photo today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/370 ) .
It's dark, damp and miserable today, so I was delighted to have an excuse to shoot indoors in warmer light. I went out to the yard, grabbed a piece of pine bark lying on the ground, and headed inside to set up my tripod for a macro shot. I was attracted to the bark by its rough texture and warm colour palette. It wasn't until I started scanning it through my macro lens that the shapes started revealing themselves to me. I can see evidence of several of the 'spirits' that reside within the bark. Can you?Spiritsthepine5193113814365 photos365Novemberabstractautumnbarkdailyshootds370macrotreeyard
Great White North?
2010 - Day 323. Nov.19, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Low contrast in a scene can connote softness, calmness, or mellowness. Make a photo today that has low contrast ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/369 ) .
Great White North? Not yet! Winter is arriving gently this year, with little reminders that anything left in the yard will soon be buried. This skiff of snow will have melted by the weekend, and yes, I'll take the hint, and do the final yard cleanup.GreatWhiteNorth5189962540365 photos365ds369CollingwoodNovemberdailyshootleafmaple leafsnowyard
Where a Man Can Hear Himself Think
2010 - Day 322. Nov. 18, 2010. Daily Shoot - Make a photograph today that visually communicates a sound. Your choice of sound, but do your best to make us "hear" it ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/368 ) . There are always sounds on the waterfront - wind, water, birds, yet it is a place of solitude and quiet, where a man can hear himself think.

Ugly
Daily Shoot - Today's assignment morphed from graffiti to find visual interest in something you don't like today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/367 ) . I had decided to skip the assignment the first time I read it. Good thing I checked back!
This was a discarded shot from this morning that I re-visited when I read the addendum to today's assignment. Intended to be abstract, this is an unfocused shot, taken through a screened and rain-spattered window, of high winds blowing the remaining leaves from a birch tree. Like the gales of November, the shot is ugly, but there's something about the texture and mood that hold the eye.Ugly5185607459CollingwoodNovemberabstractautumndailyshootleavesrainscreentreewindwindowds367
