Grasses
2010 - Day 192. July 11, 2010.
I love grasses swaying in the breeze! I took this pic while scouting out shots for today's Daily Shoot challenge ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/238 ) . I suppose it could be an 'also-ran'. I actually like this one's artsier feel better, although the one I submitted ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4782739639/ ) meets the challenge criteria better.grasses4783350154365 photos3653652010photosBlack Ash Creek TrailCollingwoodJulyplantssummertrail

Etched Glass - Take #2
2010 - Day 190. July 9, 2010.
This is a revised version of my 365 pic for today ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4777533283/ ) .
@jason.farinelli and @gibsonsgolfer made references in their comments on the original ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4777533283/ ) to the 'ice-like' nature of the shot. When I first looked at the pattern through my lens I thought it looked just like the harbour freezing over. In this version, all I did to add an icy feeling was change the white balance from daylight to tungsten. Very easy - great effect! I think I like this one best :-)EtchedglassTake4779005982365 originalCollingwoodabstractdoorhomemacro
Etched Glass
2010 - Day 190. July 9, 2010.
Today's Daily Shoot ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/236 ) challenge is to make a photograph of a glass subject. The window in my front door is made up of different patterns of etched glass. I used my macro lens to get a closeup view of the pattern. I like the way the green from the trees just outside the door is picked up and blended with the pattern.
Here's the pattern from a different section of the same window ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4777518431/ ) . I submitted it for the Daily Shoot challenge.Etchedglass4777533283365 photo3652010365photosCollingwoodabstractdoorwindowhomemacrods236

2010 - Day 189. July 8, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Make a photo with the number 4 in it one way or another. Maybe 4 items. Maybe a written number. Maybe more abstract ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/235 ) .
Ever since I posted this shot ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4731753184/ ) for Daily Shoot Challenge 221 ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/221 ) , I've wanted to take the time to wander the roadside and snap some similar pics that are less 'contrasty', softer, and warmer in mood. Thinking of a four quadrant shot, I decided today was the day!
Sometimes you know immediately when you look through the viewfinder that you've got a winner! The sun slipped behind a cloud for just a minute, leaving me with soft, warm, rich light! A shallow DOF, soft focus, gentle blur from the breeze, and ever so slight softening from my fractalius plugin gave me that lazy summer day feel I was after.ProtectingtheMeadow4774423813365 photos3652010365photosCollingwoodJulydailyshootfencefieldfractaliusroadsidesummerds235barbed wirebarbed wire fence
Gossamer Breeze

Daily Shoot - Look for an area with a big differential in light. Make a photo exposed for the brightest area, isolating a subject ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/234 ) .
I fell in love with this scene along the trail on my walk this morning! Very fine, silvery threads, on spent flower heads, blew in the gentle breeze. With the sun behind the plants it looked like spirits on the move. I had my macro lens on the camera and knew I wouldn't be able to isolate any details in sharp focus because there was just too much air movement. I looked through the lens and focused until the impression felt right, and then released the shutter. It's hard to capture magic - this is my attempt :-)GossamerBreeze4771975220365 photos3652010365photosBlack Ash Creek TrailCollingwoodJulydailyshootmacrosummertrailsweedswildflowersds234
Attracted to Blue
2010 - Day 187. July 6, 2010. Daily Shoot - Today's theme is the color blue. Blue sky. Blue plate. Blue M&Ms. Make a photo of something blue and post it today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/233 ) . I love these wildflowers, (chicory). They grow anywhere and last all summer. I took my macro lens and tripod on my trail walk this morning to capture this gorgeous blue. I set up, focusing on the stamens, when this little insect just popped into the frame. There wasn't time to change my aperture setting so I quickly tried to refocus on the insect and then just pressed the shutter. The insect definitely enriches the 'story of blue'.

Canada Day with its celebrations and fireworks has passed, so I've opted for a quieter, but no less spectacular 'celebration'. I live on the shores of Nottawasaga/Georgian Bay, a body of water known for its violence. Not so today! The bay is perfectly calm on this gorgeous summer day. Even though Clyde's a low key kind of guy he still looks handsome in high key. He very conveniently set up shop in a patch of sun in one of the flower beds this morning. I exposed for the dark areas, let the midtones and highlights blow out and then converted the photo to black and white. I left a tiny bit of colour in his eyes. Driving back from a meeting late this afternoon I scanned the side of the road for a scene that would satisfy today's challenge. Daily Shoot - Make a photo composed of interesting shadows today. Try composing with long shadows at the beginning and end of the day ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/220 ) .
I promise...I won't take photos of raindrops forever, but rain is what I have to work with lately :-). The unusual thing is that it's been very still, allowing me to use my macro lens outdoors without worrying about my subject moving all over the place. Luckily for today's challenge, we had bright sunshine first thing this morning! I jokingly said to my husband, wouldn't it be great if I could find a shadow of a raindrop! Ta dah! I love the way the shadow looks like a flower, with the sepals holding forth the drop of water like an unopened bud. This is the thing I like most about the Daily Shoot challenges - the nudge to look beyond your norm. I wanted to photograph raindrops in my garden. I would likely have ended up with pretty photos. With the focus on the shadow of the drop I have a much stronger statement!RaindropBlossoms4728243490Juneflowersgardenleavesliliesplantsrainraindropsshadowsummerdailyshootds220Collingwoodmacro

It poured all day today. I was beginning to think I wouldn't get out to shoot at all, but I took a chance late this afternoon when the rain settled in to a fine drizzle. Daily Shoot - Make a photo that creates depth. Draw the viewer in by choosing an interesting foreground, middle-ground, and background ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/217 ) .
I spent some time this afternoon just watching the world go by from my Mother's newly-installed memorial bench in Millenium Park. I got quite a number of shots of sailboats that I could have used for this challenge. I decided instead to go with this image of a little girl and her brother playing along the shore. I liked their intensity in interacting with the scene, as well as the strong contrast created by the side lighting of the late afternoon sun. I don't know these children and when I showed the shots to their mother, I promised her I would process them in such a way that her children wouldn't be identifiable. I used the sketch feature of my fractalius plugin and then converted the image to black and white using Nik's Silver Efex Pro. I suspect there will be some strong opinions about the post-processing. Daily Shoot - Your viewer’s eye will tend to follow a line. Make a photo that uses leading lines to direct the viewer to your subject ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/215 ) .
I didn't know how to expose for this shot. The hostas are in almost total shade in my garden, but there was a stream of light casting a wonderful glow through the upper part of the leaf. I switched to spot metering, tried to expose for the snail and used my flash. The end result was that nothing was exposed properly. Even after a couple of tries I couldn't get it right, and by then I'd lost my subject; it's surprising how fast snails can be ;-). In post processing I decided to go with the underexposed subject. I bumped up the blacks, as well as the highlights, creating contrast. I added a bit of definition with my fractalius plugin to counteract the slight shadow from the flash and give a clean silhouette. I still don't know how to expose for this situation, but I wanted to rescue the shot because I do like the composition, lines and mood.Deepthegarden4712428834CollingwoodJunedailyshootfractaliushostaleavesmacroplantslugsnail365365 photos2010365photosds215

Daily Shoot - Shoot wide open today. Make a creative photo that uses a shallow depth of field to good effect ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/214 ) .
The early light glistening on the raindrops in the garden was stunning this morning! It made all the leaves look like they were covered in tiny jewels. Since today's challenge was all about DOF, I wanted to go for bokeh. I decided to use both shallow depth of field and defocus, (is that a word?), to really play up the blown out highlights of the drops. I used my macro lens and focused to achieve the big blown out circles. Since I wasn't happy with everything being out of focus, I repositioned ever so slightly so that I could see one plane of drops in clearer focus. I may have tried to accomplish too much in one shot, but I think I captured the magical feeling I wanted.Morningbokeh47092728443652010365photosshallow DOF365 photosCollingwoodJunebudsbushesdailyshootgardenleavesmacrorain dropsyard

It was still enough this morning to take my macro lens and tripod with me on a little jaunt. This scene really spoke to me. Added to the normal stresses of daily life, dealing with my Mom's care, illness, death and now settling of her affairs has left me feeling like I'm living on the very edge of what I can handle. It rained all night, so everything in the garden was covered in tiny drops of water. I got hung up on the 'shoot through something translucent or transparent' part of the challenge and didn't really think about the 'invent your own filter' part. I wanted to shoot the garden through the drops. That I accomplished, but what I've really created is a lens, not a filter. In any event, I'm very happy with the shot. Once the site of Admiral Collingwood P. S., this fenced in hole in the ground anchors the south end of Collingwood's main street. Originally destined to be a beautiful structure of condo residences, retirement residences, and commercial space, the water-filled eyesore has been nicknamed Carrier Pond, (after our current mayor), by the local coffee shop pundits. The blame for this fiasco can't be placed at the feet of any one person. Previous and current council, the developer, the Heritage Committee, a rate payers' group and the state of the economy must all share in the blame. Hopefully after the next election, we'll see an end to the bickering and some positive action.MonumentPoliticalBickering4693675064Admiral Collingwood PlaceCollingwoodJuneconstructiondailyshootholewaterds209

2010 - Day 158. June 7, 2010.
I went down to Millenium Park late this afternoon to check on the progress of my Mom's memorial garden and bench. (They've poured the concrete pad for the bench). I sat for a while and watched people stopping to enjoy these beautiful spaces. I visit my Dad's bench often. Soon I'll be able to enjoy Mom's as well.GirlTalk4680386743365 photos3652010365photosCollingwoodJuneMillenium ParkNottawasaga Baybenchharbourwaterwomen
Look Down
Daily Shoot - Manhole covers have character and quietly tell a story. Make a photo of a manhole cover in your neighborhood today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/204 ) .
There are pretty ordinary manhole covers on my street - you don't really get a sense of time or place from them. When I want to see things in a different way, I pull out my macro lens. I zeroed in on a small segment where the cover meets the road. There's great texture there! You can even see some grains of road salt left over from last winter.LookDown4680947598CollingwoodJunedailyshootmanhole covermetalrustds204
After the Rain
2010 - Day 157. June 6, 2010.
It rained most of the day, but when the sun peaked out late afternoon the sailboats started heading out of the harbour.AftertheRain4677210424365 photosBlue MountainCollingwoodJuneNottawasaga Bayharboursailboatwater3652010365photos
