How Not to Participate in the Daily Shoot Challenge!
Daily Shoot - Lens flare is typically avoided, but can be used deliberately to good effect. Make a photo with creative lens flare ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/203 ) .
I should have skipped this challenge, but since I invested the time I decided to post my pic anyway. It rained most of the day, but when the sun finally broke through the clouds late afternoon, I decided to try for a shot not of a lens flare, but using a lens flare to create a statement. The problem was I had no idea what statement I wanted to make. The grain elevators were in shadow, but I wanted to use the flare to emphasize the stairs. I exposed for the building to get detail, knowing that the sky would be blown out, but somehow I thought that might add to the effect. End result - I didn't really know what I was going for, and I'm even more unsure about what I got.HowNotParticipatetheDailyShootChallenge4676965094CollingwoodCollingwood TerminalsJuneblack and whitedailyshootgrain elevatorslens flareds203
Psychedelic Poppy
2010 - Day 156. June 5, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Using contrast in your photography can give you very artistic shots. Make a color photo with high contrast today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/202 ) .
The last poppy in the garden down the street looked fine in high contrast, but I thought it deserved a little special treatment to make it memorable, (after all it is the last one). What's more fitting than a 60's/70's flashback? This is the detail stylizer in Nik's Lightroom plugin suite. Hanging On
2010 - Day 155. June 4, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Make an interpretive photo of a subject or scene that sums up your mood today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/201 ) .
I took quite a few shots of this bee 'working' the chives in my garden. Most of them are more vibrant and have much clearer detail, but they convey a very different mood than this - more vibrant and energetic. This shot does a better job of conveying my mood as I work through the tasks ahead of me - quiet, subdued, determined.Hanging46693243803652010365photos365 photosCollingwoodJunebeechivesdailyshootflowersgardeninsectspringyardds201
Nostalgia
2010 - Day 154. June 3, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Think of a favorite childhood sport, game, or activity. Make a nostalgic photo today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/200 ) . (@muffett68)
I'm swimming, (hopefully not drowning), in nostalgia these days as my sisters and I clean out my Mom's condo and dispose of the acquired 'stuff' of a lifetime. I came across my Dad's cribbage ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cribbage ) board today. This was a favourite pastime in our home (we didn't have television until I was almost into my teenage years). I remember my parents playing by themselves or with company, and my Dad teaching me to add so that I could play too. I can't really explain why I processed the image this way, except to say that it reflects my mood - quiet, subdued and nostalgic.Nostalgia4667546110365 photosCollingwoodJuneboardcribbagedailyshootgamemacrowood3652010365photosds200

Daily Shoot - Get down and get your knees dirty today. Find some plant life, get low to its level (close and wide), and make a photo ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/199 ) .
When I read today's Daily Shoot challenge, visions of the beautiful world on the forest floor came immediately to mind. Unfortunately I simply do not have time for a hike today :-(. Whenever I want to find beauty in something ordinary I pull out my macro lens. I looked for a patch of lawn where the early morning light was just starting to filter through. I steadied my camera on a bean bag on the ground and decided to go with a mid range aperture and whatever auto focus would find. I like the result - vibrant and impressionistic.thegrass4663811428Junelawnmacrospringyarddailyshootds199365365 photos2010365photos

Daily Shoot - How do you get around: car, train, bicycle, plane, feet? Make a photo that represents your mode of transportation today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/198 ) .
I am ploughing through a long list of errands today and since it seems like the whole town is dug up/under construction, walking is the best way to get around. Daily Shoot - It's Memorial Day in the U.S. Make a photo that symbolizes today and what it means to you ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/197 ) .
We don't celebrate Memorial Day in Canada, but the first thing that came to mind when I read the challenge was poppies, the symbol of our remembrance of the sacrifices made in past wars. I don't have any poppies growing in my garden, but I admire the patch down the street as I pass by every day. Today the flowers were blowing in the breeze, and with the bright sun shining on them, they looked like flames. I used the Fractalius plugin in Photoshop to play up the highlights in the blossom and enhance their flame-like quality.Glowing4655906647CollingwoodMayflowersgardenpoppiespoppyspringyardfractaliusdailyshootds197365365 photos2010365photos

Daily Shoot - Sunday challenge time! Find any sort of wildlife today, and make a photo. Get in close if you can and focus on the eyes ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/196 ) .
If you've visited my photostream you'll know I love to photograph wildlife, and fortunately I live in an area where I have lots of opportunity to do so! I hadn't visited my favourite turtle pond on the Black Ash Creek trail for a while, so that's where I headed this morning. There were lots of painted turtles enjoying the morning sunshine. By the way things sounded I'd better go back there when I have more time and wait for the frogs to show themselves.

Early Morning Stillness
2010 Day -149. May 29, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Look up today and make a photograph of the sky. Cloudy, clear, or somewhere in between? Tell the story of your sky today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/195 ) .
A very early morning walk in Harbourview Park, as the sun started its climb above the horizon, rewarded me with rare stillness - not a cloud in the sky, barely a ripple in the water. In the slight morning mist it was hard to tell where water ended and sky started. I know today's story is about the sky, but including its mirrored reflection in the water really emphasizes the calmness and creates a mood of solitude.EarlyMorningstillness4649491465CollingwoodCollingwood TerminalsHarbourview ParkMayNottawasaga Baycalmgrain elevatorsreflectionskyspringwater365365 photos2010365photosds195dailyshoot

Daily Shoot - Clocks are omnipresent in modern life. Make a photo of the clock, watch, or other device that you use most to tell time ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/194 ) .
I love analogue clocks. I've had this one a long time, as you can probably see from its aged patina. It sits in my office where I can easily see it from my desk. It doesn't keep time very well, but I find its gentle slow motion calming when I'm fighting a deadline ;-).Dragon Boat

My peonies are getting ready to bloom. As usual, the ants are pretty excited about it :-). Garden lore has it that peonies require the activity of ants in order to blossom. Apparently this is not true - they're only there to feed on the sweet juice of the waxy coating. I wish I'd been able to use my macro lens for this shot to get in really close, but unfortunately, movement and macro don't mix.Workthegarden4641503855CollingwoodMayantflowersplantspeoniesdailyshootds192365365 photos2010365photos

Daily Shoot - Focus the viewer's attention. Make a photo of a single subject with as plain a background as you can ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/191 ) .
Another shot of my chives that are starting to bloom this week. If I'd read today's challenge more carefully, I think I'd have shot something different. I used my macro lens to achieve the 'simple' background I thought was required. Upon rereading the challenge I see that we needed a plain background. Although it's blurred, there's tonal variation in the background. The chive blossom still pops though.ReadyBloom46411612843652010365photos365 photosCollingwoodMaychivesdailyshootflowersmacroplantsspringds191

Daily Shoot - Today's color is purple. Maybe you'll find it on a fruit. Maybe a flower. Or, maybe a sign. Make a photo and post it ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/190 ) .
My chives are now blooming. I used my macro lens for this shot but didn't get in as tight as I normally would, because I wanted the whole blossom in the frame. At f/13 I got nice detail in the flower, but still got great blurring of the background. I truly love this lens, (Canon EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM)! In post-processing, i just tweaked the levels slightly and bumped up the clarity to give some detail to the background without adding sharpness.chives4635202833CollingwoodMayflowersgardenmacroplantsdailyshootds190365 photos3652010365photos

Warm air + cold water=morning fog. I really liked the tranquility of the harbour this morning - quiet, low light, calm water, muted colours, softened shapes. Left Behind
2010 - Day 142. May 22, 2010. This is a runner-up for today's Daily Shoot challenge, to make a photo focused on the container rather than the contents ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/188 ) . I took this shot in Collingwood's Harbourview Park, located on the waterfront behind Tim Hortons and McDonalds. I often encounter people who've bought a coffee and then sit on a bench or wander the trails to enjoy it. Great idea! What I can't get my head around is why anyone would choose to just leave the empty cup behind! There are garbage cans in the park. The cup is paper - it can easily be folded up and stuffed in a pocket so it can be thrown out later. Unfortunately, there is enough material here to start a new series that I'll call "Left Behind".

I bought this flower pot to take to my mother in the hospital. I loved its texture and worn look! Daily Shoot - Self-assessment is vital to artistic growth. Look through the photos you've posted so far. Remake one you'd like to improve ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/184 ) .
One of my least favourite Daily Shoot photos was from last November, http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4131951127/in/set-721576227... ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4131951127/in/set-72157622725865951/ ) . It was taken near my Dad's memorial bench on Collingwood's waterfront. It seems lifeless, so I went back to the same spot this morning to see if I could inject a storyline. I also wanted to walk around the site as we're planning another memorial bench and garden close by for my mother, who passed away this week. The water was extremely calm and everything was so still, I was startled to see this little guy watching me. He followed along with me as I walked and 'hid' behind flowers or grass when I pointed the camera at him. This shot has the same elements as the first - rocks and water but it has a much stronger story.Surveillance4619913546CollingwoodCollingwood HarbourMayMillenium Parkanimalground hogrocksspringwaterfront365365 photos2010365photosdailyshootds184
Margery Caughie, 1926-2010
2010 - Days 134-137.
I haven't missed a daily photo in two years but I've been at my mother's bedside since my last shot. Mom passed away yesterday. This photo was taken 60 years ago this week on her honeymoon in Niagara Falls. I love its promise - fresh perm, new outfit, new pearls, new purse and shoes, shiny wedding band and a smile that shows her eagerness to begin her life as wife and mother. I'm crying as I type this as her reality turned out to be somewhat different than the promise shown here.
It's ok now Mom...
We'll think of you as resting,
from the sorrows and the tears,
In a place of warmth and comfort,
where there are no pains or fears.
I'm submitting this photo for the Daily Shoot Self-portrait Challenge ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/182 ) . Greening of the Forest
2010 - Day 133. May 13, 2010. Daily Shoot - Make a photograph with motion blur of one kind or another. Use a slow shutter speed, pan, or both ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/179 ) . Every day I walk along the Bruce Trail I see a difference in how green the forest is becoming. I was debating how to show that as "my story" and a light bulb went off when I read today's Daily Shoot challenge. I wanted the light exactly right to get both the darks of the trees and the fresh greens of the vegetation, so I was careful not to overexpose. With a couple of practice shots, I decided I could do a really fast pan from top to bottom of the trees with 1/13 shutter speed. The other advantage to the quick downward motion was that I got the vertical lines pretty straight. Fun technique and I think it told my story well.

I didn`t get the sharpness I wanted in this shot. It was quite windy, so the all of the vegetation was swaying in the breeze. I was limited in the shutter speed I could use as it was overcast and I didn`t have my tripod with me. Daily Shoot - Graffiti is something you can find almost anywhere. Make an interesting photograph of some graffiti and post it ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/173 ) .
Graffiti - from Italian graffiare - to scribble or graffio - a scratch. In my small community we don't get much graffiti, either in terms of defacement or urban art. The odd **** *** is quickly painted over. For this challenge I decided to take a 'can' of digital spray paint to my garden. I can't concentrate today :-(. I opened the curtains in my office to let in the beautiful sunshine and noticed the fascinating light patterns as the trees blew in the breeze. Whenever I'm feeling creative out comes my macro lens. I focused on the window screen, blurring the background into patterns of light - shades of yellow and green. It was an OK shot, and you could certainly pick out every speck of dust and cob web on my screen, but I wanted to convey how mesmerizing the scene outside my window was. Daily Shoot - Sunday challenge: Make a photo of something you cherish today in beautiful light. Arrange and move things if you need to ( ) .
I cherish my garden! I walk through it every morning, cup of tea in hand, and note the subtle changes from the day before. Most years I don't get to enjoy my tulips for long. Either the squirrels have replanted them elsewhere or the rabbits have eaten off the blooms. I loved the way the warm breeze was blowing through these today, showing off the gentle highlights that were evident even on an overcast day. I used my 100mm macro lens for a soft 'portrait' effect, exposed for the highlights, and used a 1/100 sec shutter speed to get some motion blur. In post-processing I went for low key contrast to darken the midtones and bring out the highlights more. Tap Water
Daily Shoot - TGIF! To celebrate the end of the week, make an artistic shot of your favorite beverage or libation today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/166 ) .
My favourite libation is red and robust, but I decided to shoot tap water to punctuate the statement I made in Monday's shot ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/4555663684/ ) . We are fortunate to have clean, clear, safe water running in our taps. Drink it people and forget the plastic water bottles! (...end of editorial).
It took a long time to decide how to shoot this. I wanted something creative, so I got out my macro lens. Then there was the issue of exposure. Sunlight reflected off the stainless steel of my kitchen tap and blew out the highlights in the water. I went for wide open aperture (f/2.8) to blur the reflections and let the highlights overexpose to create an abstract look. The tap almost looks like a serpent's head. I then bumped up the saturation a bit. Kind of a fun shot!Tarted Up

I set out to get a picture of moving water for this challenge and decided to head to the Slabtown dam on the Beaver River in Clarksburg. What's that idiom? You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear? Well the light was just wrong! Even with my polarizing filter, it was simply the wrong time of day to shoot water flowing over the dam. I hiked along the river instead and came across this view. There's nothing as energizing as the vivid blues and greens of spring!Beaverriver4559388622365 photosBeaver RiverClarksburgGrey CountySlabtownreflectiontreeswater3652010365photosdailyshootds163
Fresh Water, Anyone?
Daily Shoot - Plastic is everywhere. Make a photograph that illustrates a use of plastic in your life today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/162 ) .
If you follow my photostream you'll know that I have beautiful places to walk, bike, hike and enjoy nature. You would think that everyone who uses these incredible spaces would have an understanding of the importance of stewardship. I guess not! I knew I'd find a discarded plastic water bottle no matter where I walked this morning. It took me less than ten minutes to find this one washed up on shore. What a shame!FreshwaterAnyone4555663684AprilCollingwoodNottawasaga Baydailyshootrocksshorelinespringwater bottleds162
Relaxing in The Village @ Blue
2010 - Day 113. Apr. 23, 2010.
Daily Shoot - Train your eye to look for repetition. Make a photo of a repeating subject while considering composition and DOF ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/159 ) .
I'm not a skier so I don't often go up to the Village at Blue Mountain. I used today's Daily Shoot challenge as an excuse to visit, browse the shops, and enjoy a drink in the sun in one of the colourful Muskoka chairs that line the pond. Thanks guys at Daily Shoot! It was a gorgeous morning and I really needed the break!RelaxingTheVillageBlue4546485604365365 photos2010365photosAprilBlue MountainCollingwoodMuskoka chairsVillage Bluechairsdailyshootpondspringds159

The light just starting to reach my neighbours' magnolia trees early this morning was incredible! It gave the whole scene a warmth and vibrancy you don't normally see.Morningmagnolias4541682738365365 photos2010365photosAprilCollingwoodmagnolia treesspring
