Under the Weather
2011 - Day 46. Feb. 15, 2011.
Poor Clyde is not feeling well! He stoically allowed the vet to poke, prod and take blood today. He was rewarded with a warm blanket and get this - baby food! That was the vet's suggestion as it is moister and more nutritious than cat food. He loved it! Now we'll just wait for the results of the blood tests.UndertheWeather54494529723652011365ClydeCollingwoodFebruaryblanketcat

After a long travel day, our first impressions of the resort in Los Cabos, Mexico were beyond our expectations! They delivered on their promise of an ocean-view from every suite! Groundhog Day Storm Has Major Impact on Travel
2011 - Day 33. Feb. 2, 2011.
Daily Shoot - Pretend you're a stringer for your local newspaper today. Make a photo that captures something newsworthy to you ( http://www.dailyshoot.com/assignments/444 ) .
School buses are cancelled and roads in and out of town are closed, but the 'Groundhog Day Storm' is less severe than some of the conditions we've already experienced this winter. With my headline in mind, I went snowshoeing on the Georgian Trail to get shots of cross-country skiers. While I shot several good journalistic photos, this out of focus one really appeals to me. I had been using manual focus because the fat snowflakes were driving the autofocus motor insane. Inspired by Jeff's abstract storm shot yesterday ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffm211/5408920389/ ) I decided to turn autofocus back on to try to focus on the snow itself. I like the result - not a journalistic photo, but one that tells a story just the same.
BTW, groundhog Wiarton Willie predicted there would only be six more weeks of winter!GroundhogDayStormHasMajorImpactTravel54107304513652011CollingwoodFebruaryGeorgian Traildailyshootfocus blurskiersnowwinterds444
Just a Peek - Colour
2011 - Day 32. Feb. 1, 2011.
A peek inside my bouquet of tulips. I was trying for depth of field to give some separation to the petals, but soft light and focus to create a billowy, soft, satin effect.

Daily Shoot - Make a photograph using hard light today. Feature the crisp and strong shadows as a major element of your photograph ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/441 ) .
There was just enough sunshine to cast some shadows within my tulips, adding extra 'layers'. It's funny, I purchased these tulips specifically for the colour palette - subtle white/green/yellow, but so far I've only shot them in black and white. The softness carries over nicely.Layers54018751563652011365CollingwoodJanuaryds441dailyshootmacromonochromatictulip

2011 - Day 28. Jan. 28, 2011.
Daily Shoot - Today's theme is red. Red hot? Red paint? Or something else? You decide ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/439 ) .
The decorating/decor magazines say you should give your front door a pop of colour. I guess that applies to ice fishing huts as well!
The pitiful excuse we had for light today was so flat I could barely distinguish the edge of the snow-covered dock I was standing on from the ice below me. I played around with adjusting the contrast but decided to leave it as I saw it - flat. I should have gone with my original idea, which was to buy myself some red tulips!RedDoor53963265663652011CollingwoodJanuarydailyshootfish hutsharbouricesnowwinter

We had sunshine for about an hour this morning but it was too cold to go for a hike. You can see how crystalline the snow is. Thankfully I found some interesting shadows in my own yard. This is actually my swimming pool - buried under several meters of snow. I miss it!

2011 - Day 23. Jan. 23, 2011.
Daily Shoot - Celebrate the pretty things in life. Make a photograph of the most beautiful thing you see today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/434 ) .
How's this for serendipity? I was looking out my patio door, lamenting the fact that although we had such pretty light for shooting, the wind chill was -35 degrees C. That's simply too cold for both myself and my camera. As I was noticing how the air itself seemed frozen, heavy with ice crystals, I saw the clouds. As the sun tried to burn through, the light bounced off the ice crystals, creating beautiful patches of frozen colour throughout the clouds! I bundled up and managed to get a couple of shots off before my camera froze up - totally worth it!rainbowclouds53823603383652011365CollingwoodJanuarycolddailyshootsunshinewinterds434
I Told You I'd Give It to You When I Was Finished!
2011 - Day 22. Jan. 22, 2011.
Clyde seemed to think I was going to take the newspaper from him. I'm not sure why, but he has a paper fetish. He'll come running from anywhere in the house as soon as he hears the printer. If I don't give him his own piece of paper he rips mine from the printer tray.

Are you getting tired of my potted crocus yet ;-) I've really had a lot of fun exploring this little plant with my macro lens. Today I shot wide open at f/2.8 without really focusing on any one leaf. Frozen Village
2011 - Day 21. Jan. 21, 2011.
Daily Shoot - Take color out of the equation and make a monochromatic photograph today. ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/432 ) .
When you mention 'The Village' around Collingwood, you're usually referring to the Village at Blue Mountain. This collection of ice fishing huts on the frozen harbour looks like a village to me.
The picture perfectly illustrates what happens when a snow squall blows in across the bay. The wind picks up, the clouds laden with moisture from Georgian Bay blow in, and we get dumped on. I hope the fishermen were warm in their little huts, because it was really windy and cold!
I think this shot is monochromatic as is. (The hut on the far left had a beautiful red door, so I desaturated the red channel). I tried converting the photo to black and white, but it loses the effect of the squall line pushing out the blue skies.FrozenVillage53762817183652011365CollingwoodJanuaryds432dailyshootharbouriceice hutssnowsnow squallwindwinter

We have quite a population of ducks that no longer migrate. Even though the harbour is frozen over, there's open water near the outlet of the sewage treatment plant, and that's where they hang out.
I didn't get as many 'keepers' as usual from my short shoot because my fingers were frozen and the light was awful. I'm getting tired of shooting in, as John King ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/85528706@N00 ) called it, 'available gloom'!
