Walking on Air
2011 - Day 174.June 23, 2011.
Daily Shoot - Work the angles today. Make a photo that gives us a unique perspective on an otherwise ordinary scene ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/585 ) .
A pair of running shoes has been hanging from the wires across Oak St. for about a week now. I've been meaning to shoot them, and when I read today's challenge I knew today was the day. In retrospect, I probably should have tried to get both shoes in the frame, but as I was standing in the middle of the street, I just grabbed a quick shot and got out of there :-).
BTW, this is the very first thing I've done with my new Wacom pen and tablet, so I added some localized sharpening to just the shoe. It didn't really need it, but I wanted to try out the pen. What a hoot! It was like learning to use a mouse all over again! I think I'm going to like it though!WalkingAir58646519283652011CollingwoodJunedailyshootshoewire

2011 - Day 173. June 22, 2011.
Make a photo of a pair of subjects today. People or inanimate objects are both fair game ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/584 ) .
Hopefully there are enough 'pairs' in here to work. I couldn't wait around until another hoverfly dropped into my camera range ;-).
It was a tough day to be using a macro lens outdoors. Since it was a dull, drizzly morning I went with a wide open aperture setting to let in enough light. The hoverfly was clinging to a peony blossom that was blowing all over the place in the breeze. (I have a bunch of shots where the insect wasn't in the frame at all!) I ended up with at least one shot with reasonable focus, but the really shallow DOF makes the whole composition seem a bit too soft to me.LifetheEdge58603996793652011CollingwoodJunedailyshootgardenhoverflyinsectpeoniessummermacro

Daily Shoot - Illustrate heat in one of its many forms in a photograph today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/582 ) .

This is a companion piece to my pic from the other day ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dibytes/5842444404/in/photostream ) . Clyde seems to be getting over his fear of the outdoors, (still not sure what scared him in the first place). He willingly went out into the yard with me this morning and settled in to the 'wild area' under the bird feeders. If you look closely, you'll see his inner tiger lurking in the shadows for support.
BTW, don't worry about the birds. They know he's there!The Colour of Summer

2011 - Day 168. June 17, 2011.
Daily Shoot - Make a photograph that features a shadow as your subject today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/579 ) .
OK, so maybe I lost my way on my journey to a 'shadow' shot today! I do like where I ended up.
Something has scared Clyde, (could be the ducks that have adopted the pool, the muskrat that wanders through the yard, or my neighbour's malamute that can jump fences). The problem is Clyde no longer wants to go outside. He's just been lying around the house getting fat. I really think he's much healthier when he's mentally and physically active in the yard, so I coaxed him out this morning and stayed with him while he went on a little scouting mission.
I liked the shadowy area that Clyde's exiting under the bushes. It seemed kind of empty though, so I added a courage booster for Clyde. I layered in the tiger with luminosity as the blending mode, played with the opacity, and 'painted' back bush detail. I like the effect and what it adds to the 'narrative'. The tiger seems to be part of the shadows, an inner voice whispering encouragement in Clyde's ear.theJungleMighty58424444043652011ClydeCollingwoodJunecatcompositedailyshoottigeryard

2011 - Day 165. June 14, 2011.
I quickly hit the brakes as soon as I saw this scene at the side of the road in front of the auto wrecker's. What a great idea! It stops people from just dropping stuff off on the roadside.
I knew this would be a perfect candidate to try out some of the texturing techniques I learned in last weekend's creativeLIVE course with Doug Landreth. I took lots of shots of the outside of the barrel to use as my texture layer. I spent so long there a worried-looking employee came out to see if there was a problem. I tried to explain that I was making art out of their junk ;-)
After I layered the texture and photo and played with blending modes and layer masking in Photoshop, I went back to Lightroom to add split toning effects to give a bit of an 'old photo' look to the piece. I think you'll agree this is definitely outside my norm, but I'm close to being happy with the way it turned out. The area I know I still need to work on is getting the intensity of the background texture right, so it looks like an integral part of 'the story' and not an add-on. I may soften up this texture later if I have time and re-post it.Scrap58332080063652011CollingwoodJuneTrashTalkTuesdayjunk yardmetalrusttexture

I took a quick walk at Wasaga Beach on my way back from a meeting in Midland. I only grabbed a couple of quick shots because the sand was blowing really hard, and I was concerned about my camera. We're in Day 2 of CreativeLive's Beyond Photography - Artistic Post Production with Doug Landreth ( http://www.creativelive.com/courses/beyond-photography-artistic-post-production-doug-landreth ) . I'm trying to apply what I'm learning as we go along.
In this shot I isolated a single chive blossom in order to get a very simple background and then waited for the bee to drop into the scene. I added a honeycomb texture and then just played with hue, saturation, blending modes and opacity until I was happy with the result.beeWork58219762013652011CollingwoodJunechivesdailyshootgardenspringtexture

Thanks to a heads up from a friend, I was at the harbour this morning to watch the second launch of the Great Lakes freighter, Black Bay. Known as Hull 172, Black Bay was built in Collingwood and launched on September 20, 1962. After an illustrious forty year career as one of the 'Queens of the Lakes', (a moniker afforded the longest vessel(s) on the Great Lakes), she was beached for scrap in Aliaga, Turkey. This beautiful replica was built by Don Near of Hanover. One of the ladders leading down to the water along the pier in the new Shipyards waterfront development. It was quite a stretch for me to lean over the edge far enough to catch a few of the rungs, keep my feet out of the shot, and not topple over into the harbour! I seem to be bringing out the 'let's help the little old lady' in people lately. A very nice young man came over to inquire if I needed assistance of any kind ;-)

Robin on a Post
2011 - Day 151. May 31, 2011.
Daily Shoot - Make a photograph dominated by the color orange today ( http://dailyshoot.com/assignments/562 ) . (OK, so maybe 'dominated by orange' is stretching things, but the orange breast certainly defines the robin.)
This is one of those shots that just struck a chord with me. Yes, it's just a robin on a post, but in my mind, it's quintessentially summer, evoking childhood memories of long summer days spent outdoors. We wondered the fields and woods making new discoveries every single day. Today I discovered this robin with its prize, not earth-shattering, just a quiet moment for reflection.
On the technical side, this was impossible to expose for. It's one of those instances where the photography books tell you to come back later when the lighting conditions are better. The sun was too high and the light harsh, blowing out the highlights of the bird's beak, and casting dark shadows on its breast. I adjusted the exposure until I was happy with the bokeh background in Lightroom. Then I jumped over to Photoshop:
-duplicated the layer;
-changed the blending mode to 'screen', which really brightened up the bird;
-played with the opacity of that layer until I could see detail of the breast, but still allow for the shadow that was naturally there;
-added a layer mask and inverted it to protect the background;
-using white, 'painted' back the newly lightened detail of the bird.
There are still issues of course. The top of the bird's beak is blown out, but I like the way that bright spot draws the eye to the food in the bird's mouth. For me the added effort was worth it - for some reason this shot speaks to me...Follow Me!
