One of the things that keeps us going back to Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico each winter is the beach. You can walk forever! I spent 2 hours each morning and another hour every afternoon on our vacation walking that beach. Every morning I met this elderly gentleman on his daily jog. Well into his eighties, he exhibited the attitude and fitness level of a man decades younger!

In yesterday's budget the Federal Government announced it will phase out the Canadian penny starting this Fall. Costing 1.6 cents to manufacture, the coin actually costs government, banks and businesses millions each year to keep it in circulation. The move will affect only cash transactions, where prices will be rounded up or down. (I'll believe the rounding down bit when I see it.)I See You Squirrel

First off let me state that no squirrels were harmed during this photo shoot! Clyde's so caught up in the excitement of being outdoors again, (he wimps out during the winter), that he's forgotten he can't actually catch squirrels.SeeYouSquirrel6882089428365 projects3652012ClydeCollingwoodMarchSeasonsSpringcatgarden

Side Launch Mural #2
March 26, 2012.
Since my departure for England is only a week and a half away, I thought I'd better get out with the new Canon G1X and practice taking shots of buildings. What is it that the experts tell us? When you think you're close enough, move in more. That's what I did here.
Collingwood was once a shipbuilding town, building 700'-1000' lakers to carry cargo on the Great Lakes. If you follow Windsordi's photostream ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/windsordi/ ) you'll see beautiful shots of these workhorses. Some of them are ships we built, still in service. The Shipyards closed in 1986. Now when you mention 'The Shipyards' you're more likely referring to the condos being built on Collingwood's waterfront. This mural greats you when you enter the downtown area from the northeast. The building is set to be torn down as part of the intersection re-design. I hope they can somehow save the mural!SideLaunchmural70182332213652012CollingwoodMarchShipyardsbuildinglakershipside launchG1X

Through the Looking Glass
Mar. 25, 2012.
Reflections in the pond. Let's see how these tender, young buds fare with dropping temperatures. Tonight's low is expected to be -5°C, followed by a high tomorrow of 1°C, 25 degrees cooler than last week!
One of the features I'm really enjoying on my new Canon G1X is the level display on the view finder. I got the trees nice and straight in-camera.ThroughtheLookingGlass70158460033652012CollingwoodG1xMarchSpringpondreflectionstreeswater
Is It Time to Get Up?
Mar. 24, 2012.
I took this shot a few days ago with my new Canon G1X. I was really wishing that I'd had my DSLR with a longer lens with me when I spotted turtles in the pond on the Georgian Trail. I hadn't expected to see them out in March. It was a good exercise for me just the same, to get the shot with the gear at hand. I'm liking lots about Canon's newest release. It seems to fit the slot I was looking to fill - compact, sturdy, manual controls, good picture quality. Its zoom leaves room for improvement, (4x optical). That forced me to get as close as I could to the turtle without scaring it off or falling in the pond.TimeGet68654292003652012CollingwoodGeorgian TrailMarchSpringpainted turtlepondturtleG1X

Knowing that my neighbours' magnolia trees are blooming very early I checked back through my photos from past years to see when the buds were at this stage. These blooms are four to six weeks early! After breaking records this week we're headed back to single digit temperatures by Monday. I hope the magnolias can take it!Journey to the Sea - Rescue Center

The Colour of Spring
March 21, 2012.
I don't know what these tiny little flowers are. They're a gift to me from the squirrels :-). I wanted to take a macro shot but knew I wouldn't get a sharp focus because of the gentle motion of the flowers in the breeze. I went with the widest aperture, set the camera on the ground, and hoped something would blow into reasonable focus. I like the resulting abstract.TheColourSpring70040787253652012CollingwoodMarchabstractgardenmacroflowersNikColor Efex Pro 4Scilla siberica

Ghosts of Seasons Past #3
March 19, 2012.
This is the third of a series of three shots I've called 'Ghosts of Seasons Past'. Now that the snow has receded, the remains of last fall have reappeared in my yard. The leaves are but ghosts with the frailest of skeletons that threaten to turn to dust at the lightest touch. I processed the shots in Nik's Silver Efex Pro 2, using the 'Yellowed' setting as my point de depart.GhostsSeasonsPast68521495763652012Collingwoodleafmacromonochromatic

Nuevo Vallarta Sunset #4
This is the first series of shots from our recent trip to Mexico.
One of the things I love best about Mexico is the intensity of the sunsets. Our resort in Nuevo Vallarta faced the Bay of Banderas and the setting sun. It appears that this winter's wacky weather extended to Mexico as well, as we experienced much more cloud cover than we ever have on previous visits. The first sunsets were disappointing, but we did get a few stunning ones before the end of our visit.NuevoVallartasunset69956067233652012Bay of BanderasFebruaryMexicoNuevo Vallarta

New Kid on the Block
I'm becoming increasingly mindful of security while travelling. While I felt safe on our recent trip to Mexico, I did feel like I was drawing unnecessary attention to myself on my daily beach walks. (And I'm pretty sure it wasn't because of my funky hair style or new bathing suit ;-). My camera, especially with the long lenses, attracts attention. Since I'm off to England in a couple of weeks I asked my husband for an early birthday present. This is it - Canon's newly launched G1X. Touted as "beyond anything the G-Series has seen before", it seems a good option for travelling. I have a G9, which I like, but the new G1X is in a new niche for Canon, a bridge between point and shoot and DSLR. Its new 1.5-inch High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor boasts a light-sensitive area that's approximately 6.3 times larger than that of the G12. With 14.3 Megapixel sensor, new lens and DIGIC 5 Image Processor, the camera promises to deliver exceptional image quality. I think I'll like it's compact size and nondescript appearance. Now...I need play time...
