Triste
Apr. 23, 2012.
I was struck this morning by how forlorn my daffodils looked as they huddled together waiting for winter's last kick at the can.
I processed the photo in Nik's Silver Efex Pro 2, using the 'Film Noir' preset as my jumping off point. Back in Lightroom 4 I used the adjustment brush to modify highlights and clarity.
It's not a cheery spring photo, but then we're expecting snow, nothing to cheer about this late in the season :-(.Triste71064958993652012AprilCollingwoodSpringblack and whitecolddaffodilsflowersgarden

I think we need a little break from my travel photos. This hyacinth in my garden looked so much like it had been painted there, I decided to go with that effect. In Nik's Color Efex Pro 4, I started with the 'detail enhancer' preset to flatten the contrast and bring out the dark details. Back in Lightroom I added some clarity just to the blossoms, bumped up the whites a bit, and boosted the vibrance level.Purple70959680853652012AprilCollingwoodSpringabstractflowersgardenhyacinthNikColor Efex Pro 4

April 2012. London, England. I couldn't come up with a unique take on this iconic landmark :-(, so I simply did the tourist thing. Since the weather was grey and drizzly, I opted for black and white. I was able to bring out a bit of detail in the sky that way. I used an orange filter in the B&W conversion which really brought out highlights in the stone.

Stonehenge #6
April, 2012. Wiltshire, Great Britain.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ancient stone circle evolved between 3,000 BC and 1,600 BC. Aligned with midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset, Stonehenge is a source of inspiration and fascination for some, and for others, a place of worship and celebration.
Visitors to this site up 'til the early 1970s were allowed to wander among the stones and even chip off pieces as souvenirs. That practice has ended and visitors are now kept back from the stones by a low, very unobtrusive fence. As you walk the perimeter of the area you are treated to views from different distances and sight lines. We arrived at Stonehenge right after a fierce rain and hail storm blew through. The residual clouds provided a dramatic backdrop. My little travel camera, Canon's new G1X has manual controls that gave me some hope of working with exposure in both harsh open spaces and dark interiors.

Salisbury Cathedral #1
April 2012. Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.
Salisbury Cathedral was built in a mere 38 years (1220 - 1258), in a single architectural style, early English Gothic. The tower and spire (Britain’s tallest) were added from 1310-1330. Home to the best preserved of four surviving original Magna Carta, sealed by King John in 1215, Salisbury Cathedral is more than an historical monument. It is a dynamic working church, mother church of the Diocese of Salisbury. Unlike in other cathedrals and churches I visited, photography is allowed, except for in the Chapter House where the Magna Carta is displayed.
Photographing cathedrals is neck-breaking work. I watched this photographer for quite a while as he tried to get his shot.

This is the tomb of William Longespee, illegitimate son of King Henry II and half brother of King John. Present at the laying of the foundation stones in 1220, he died in 1226, and became the first person to be buried in the cathedral. What a final resting place!

O Dibytes, O Dibytes, Where Have You Been?
April 2012. London, England.
O Dibytes, O Dibytes, where have you been?
I've been to London to visit the Queen.
O Dibytes, O Dibytes, what did you there?
I saw wondrous sights in this city so fair!
I'm back! I have some sleep-catching-up to do, but I'll try to organize and post shots from my trip to London over the next week.
As I wandered throughout London, many tourists stopped me to ask if I'd take photos of them with their camera. I gladly obliged, and on this beautifully sunny day, (there weren't many), I decided to ask the same of fellow strollers. Well...I ask you, how hard can it be to get one little woman, and one tall structure in the same frame? What a riot! LOL! You see should the shots I got. This is the best of the bunch from a half dozen different photographers.dibytesWhereHaveYouBeen69346373903652012AprilDianeEnglandLondonThames RiverTower BridgeUnited KingdomGreat Britain
Blending In #7
Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. February 2012.
If you follow my photostream, you may have noticed that I'm trying to take a more thematic approach to my 365 project this year. Hence I've been grouping shots where I can, rather than posting daily random shots. I'm liking the approach so far, because it's giving me time to dig into a theme, photographic style or processing technique.
I took this series along a marina breakwall. You'd be amazed at the number of people who stopped to ask what I was so intently photographing among the rocks. They didn't see the crabs until I pointed them out. I was really taken with how well all of the wildlife blended in to the beautiful backdrop that is Mexico. We humans on the other hand are taking all available space to put up huge resorts with little thought to making them 'blend in'. This is not a judgmental statement. After all I pay to come to these resorts each winter. I just think we still have lots to learn.
