Newfoundland Trip #30 - Sunset
July 20, 2012. Rocky Harbour, Nfld.
I was so glad I decided to break off from the group and wander around Rocky Harbour on my own after dinner! The setting sun painted the landscape with incredibly vibrant colour! I didn't have a tripod with me so I parked myself on the ground, leaning up against a fence post for stability, and then went for as much DOF as my little camera could muster!

Newfoundland Trip #21 - Whale at 12:00 O'clock!
July 19, 2012. Saint Anthony, Nfld.
We took a whale/iceberg spotting tour with Northland Discovery Tours and managed to see both! Unfortunately I was only able to get off a few shots during the tour. I made a huge error in judgement by going to the upper viewing deck! It was so windy up there that I spent the entire time clinging to a corner railing trying to convince my stomach that it didn't have to pitch with the boat :-(. I'm shocked that the next few shots are in focus!
This is a humpback whale. Although we could see the icebergs on the horizon they were too far away for good shots, and the captain wasn't keen to take a load of tourists through the choppy waters to get there. I think he made a wise choice!

Newfoundland Trip #20 - St. Anthony, Picturesque and Welcoming
July 19, 2012. Saint Anthony, Nfld. I loved this quaint little town on the northern tip of Newfoundland! We arrived at the Crow's Nest B&B totally drenched and half frozen to death. The owners couldn't have been more welcoming and graciously helped us to get our gear dried out. After we'd warmed up a bit they sent us off to the local Legion for a Jigs dinner and a bit of fun as the locals performed a 'Screech-In Ceremony" to welcome us to Newfoundland. We ate salt cod, drank screech, kissed the cod and had dialect lessons - all in good fun! This scene is typical of the homes we saw along the west coast - one story, mostly white and huddled together in interesting lot formations. Very pretty! Newfoundland Trip #8 - Viking Encounter
July 19, 2012. L'Anse aux Meadows. While the weather was the pits when we were riding, (rain, wind, cold...did I mention rain?), it cleared up enough on our off-bike days to allow us to explore. We were able to see just about everything we wanted to! This is the scene approaching the entrance to L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic site. "The reconstructions of three Norse buildings are the focal point of this archaeological site, the earliest known European settlement in the New World. The archaeological remains at the site were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Exhibits highlight the Viking lifestyle, artifacts, and the archaeological discovery of the site." Newfoundland Trip #7 - Geared Up!
July 17, 2012. Stephensville, Nfld.
Geared up with our rain gear. We're still smiling at this point because, it's reasonably warm, it's just a light rain, we've got the right gear, and hey, we're tough ;-)
This is the last picture I took from the road! As we headed north, the temperature plummeted, the wind picked up and it poured buckets and buckets! We were all in agreement that this was the worst ride any of us had ever done! Normally we would pull over in those conditions, book hotel rooms and wait it out. Not so this trip! Hotels on the west coast are few and far between. Besides we had to get to the rooms we had pre-booked along the way.

We recently took a motorocycle trip to Newfoundland with three other couples. The guys rode the bikes from here to North Sydney, N.S. The women flew to Sydney and met the guys in North Sydney to catch the ferry to Newfoundland. We started off at the crack of dawn in fairly mild temperatures with the threat of rain. My bird feeders are mounted in the middle of a flower bed where it doesn't matter if some of the dropped seeds sprout. Quite often the sunflower seeds will germinate and shoot up, but the squirrels lop off the flowers as soon as they appear, leaving me with odd looking beheaded stalks. I'm so excited this year to see one sunflower plant that is now more than five feet tall and full of flowers! Please, please squirrels let me keep them!!!Mating Ritual

Spirit of the Woods #1
June 24, 2012
This is one of three wooden carvings at the entrance to Collingwood's Arboretum Park. In processing these shots I wanted to keep some of the texture of the wood, but I also wanted to make the carving appear more human-like, as well as create a mystical mood.
I created a soft texture by photographing flowers in the same park, out of focus, with a shallow depth of field. After layering the texture on the image I applied a mask and 'painted back' face detail. In Nik's Color Efex Pro 4, I refined and combined the 'Midnight', 'Glamour Glow', and 'Soft Contrast' presets. Back in Lightroom 4 I did minor tweaking of saturation and clarity levels.
I'm a member of the Georgian Bay Artisans group and I'm busily getting ready for the summer's outdoor art shows, the first of which is this coming Saturday at the Tremont. I've printed this series on canvas and added floating espresso frames. I'll be interested in hearing feedback from the show's attendees :-).SpirittheWoods74315294883652012Arboretum ParkCollingwoodabstractcompositeprintedtexturewood carvingHSSSliders Sunday
