July 22, 2012. Tablelands, Gros Morne National Par, Nfld. Looking more like Mars than Newfoundland, this is the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park. What you see is peridotite rock, originating in the Earth's mantle and forced up by plate tectonics several hundred million years ago. Peridotite, which is very low in calcium, high in magnesium and heavy metals, lacks the nutrients required to sustain most plant life.
