Tranquility

The open water behind the sewage treatment plant is usually a chaotic crowd of water fowl. Today's sunshine seemed to have a calming effect on the birds.

Inukshuk

People seem to be quite taken with these stone structures. I found this one on the Hen and Chickens Trail in Collingwood, Ontario. The traditional Inuit meaning of Inukshuk, "Someonewas here" or "You are on the right path", strikes a welcoming chord with hikers.

Dating back to the 1850s Watts Boats built sailing skiffs for the local and Great Lakes fishing industries. The historic building is now used by the Collingwood Yacht Club. This is a double exposure created in-camera.

Hundreds of cyclists pitted their skill and stamina against the rolling hills of the Niagara Escarpment in the Collingwood area this weekend. Judging by the whooping I heard as the racers descended the hills of County Rd. 91, they enjoyed the vistas and challenges alike.

The sun had already set, but the several hundred people lining the waterfront in Collingwood's Millennium Park were rewarded with the sight and sound of one of the tall ships from The TALL SHIPS® 1812 Tour. Firing its canons as it entered the harbour, the ship arrived in grand style! (2013-08-16.)

Silver Creek

Dec. 30, 2012. It was a gorgeous day for my first snowshoe trek this winter - not too cold and just enough snow! This is a shot of Silver Creek taken from the Bruce Trail in Grey County. Normally when I'm hiking I record the track on my cell phone, export the gpx file, and import it into Lightroom, which then matches it up with my photos. No more! My new Canon 6D comes with built-in GPS!

Downtown Collingwood is adorned with 'Ice Sculptures Fit for a Queen!' That's the theme of this year's ice festival, part of the celebrations for HRH Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee year.

Bruce Trail

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson While this may be good overall advice for life's journey, I would suggest that in the woods you try to stick to the trail :-). I won't say I was lost this morning on the Petun Loop of the Bruce Trail, but with the rapidly falling leaves covering the ground, and my many side jaunts to take photos, let's just say I was pleased to come across this trail blaze!

My journey through the world of photography is shaping up to be a bit like this sign...exciting choices in direction, but ultimately all trails lead inwards. Sept. 26, 2012. With our scenic rural roads and escarpment inclines we are becoming a popular destination for cyclists. I took this shot in Clearview, just outside of Collingwood, during the recent Centurion road races.

Holding On to the Last Rays

Aug. 30, 2012. The limestone bluffs of the Niagara Escarpment at Kimberley in Grey County glow in the evening, soaking up the last rays of the setting sun. It was a bonus to catch the rising moon at the same time!

Aug. 8, 2012. Collingwood Harbour. Thanks to a quick phone call from a friend I was able to catch the arrival of the Toronto Brigantine tall ship Playfair, as she sailed into Collingwood Harbour. This ship and her sister, Pathfinder are moored in the harbour for the weekend. The teenage sailors on board have signed up for summer camps to learn to sail these beautiful vessels on the Great Lakes. I had my circular polarizing filter on my lens. I like the way the blues pop!

May 24, 2012. It's been a wonderfully warm day today! The goslings decided to celebrate with a dip in the harbour, a long way down for these little guys!

Into a Postcard

May 18, 2012. I walked the Georgian Trail at Craigleith this morning to take photos of the lilac stands that line the trail. I was drawn to the sight of this bike propped on the bench while the owner explored the lilacs. It looked like a postcard, so that was my starting point in processing the photo. After basic adjustments in Lightroom 4, I used the pastel preset in Nik's Color Efex Pro 4 plugin, added a lightened vignette, and finally a subtle border.

Pole-sitting?

2012 - Day 23. Jan. 23, 2012. Don't know if he's going for a record, but this snowy owl has been hanging around the Collingwood Airport, usually coming to rest on this hydro pole. (Thanks for tipping me off Cathy!) The snowy owl usually resides in the Arctic tundra but migrates south to hunt during the winter months. While they're often reported as winter visitors to Northern Ontario,we rarely see them this far south. I took this shot yesterday with my 300mm lens, handheld, my husband parked down the road a bit making sure I didn't get hit by passing cars ;-)

2012 - Day 24. Jan.24, 2012. I took this shot on the weekend in the Pretty River Valley Provincial Park near Collingwood. The hibernal wind, (as wacky as it is this winter), has clumped the snow like fungi on the trees.

Lookout Over the Valley

2012 - Day 22. Jan. 22, 2012. Most of my views from the escarpment look out over the bay. Yesterday we snowshoed in the Pretty River Valley Provincial Park just southwest of Collingwood. This lookout point on the Russ McConnell side trail provided a beautiful vista of the Pretty River Valley. If you look to the left you can see the snow flurries approaching.
